Pensworth
monitor the supply of their milk from the cow to the end user. Product quality
and chill chain management are seen as paramount
to the success of the company. On farm, processing plant, and further laboratory
testing are key components of the production process which ensures the milk
products are brought to the customer in the best of conditions.
Throughout
the chill chain the milk is kept chilled at 2 degrees Celcius using the latest
technology with-in the company’s cold storage rooms and with-in the transport
fleet. The temperature is monitored on an hourly basis at all points in the
chain with the aid of micro-chip temperature sensors, which can store the
information for many months and can provide print outs of the temperature at any
given time.
The
milk with-in the chill chain is kept fully refrigerated at all times using a
closed system and the freshness of the product is maintained through careful
stock rotation and by knowing exactly where all the milk is sourced. Pensworth
has access to its own farmer based milk field, which allows a high level of
traceability.
Inside the cold room
Recent
heavy investment with-in the company has meant that the lorry fleet and cold
room stores are all relatively new and incorporate the latest technology. The
lorry bodies which hold the milk are unique to Pensworth and have been designed
specifically to allow the product to be delivered in the best possible
condition. The main cold store at Pensworth was installed in 2001 and a further
large storage facility is being planned for the year 2004.
The monitoring of product quality does not stop once the milk has been delivered. Pensworth go to great lengths to assist their customers with advice and support on product presentation and product management with-in the shop environment. Best practice statements and refrigeration testing are all part of the total package provided. Many good ideas have come from working with our customers in a partnership type relationship.
