The Pensworth work ethic is based on respect, fairness, flexibility and effort. The team at Pensworth are ultimately more effective as a total unit than as individual people and it has always been seen as a vital characteristic that everyone works for the team and not just for themselves.
Working at Pensworth is meant to involve hard work but at the same time be enjoyable. The management team take the approach of ‘job and finish’. Decisions are made on the basis of fairness to both the employee and the employer. All actions taken must be well communicated and explained to any individual involved. Payment and conditions are aiming to be slightly above the average for the sector.
All staff at Pensworth are asked to respect all their colleagues whatever their position in the company and have the same level of respect for all stakeholders and members of the public. A mature approach to work and all contacts with the customer and public is required. The company has a high public profile and this position in the community at large must be respected. A key component of respect is clear and concise communication. A systematic approach to communication is encouraged and all staff at Pensworth are trained in the art of good communication.
The approach to our work involves being flexible. To provide our customers with the levels of service they require, all Pensworth staff need to be flexible. In addition, we aim to equip all staff with a number of skills and opportunities with-in the company which provide motivated and multi-functional people. The more tasks an individual understands the greater benefits to that individual and the company. This involves external and internal training opportunities.
For Pensworth to achieve its aims requires a great collective effort from all the team, especially in the competitive world of milk supply. The nature of the work has always been ‘hands on’ and involves long and unsociable hours. For Pensworth to provide the best products and service takes a lot of effort and all team members are required to pull their weight.

Our
professional and dedicated team of drivers at Pensworth form the
back-bone of the company and are the key contact point with all Pensworth
customers. The significance of having the best drivers available can not be
over-emphasised.
To
drive at Pensworth is a way of life and the total commitment required is vital
for success. The work is hard and the hours worked unsociable. Lifting and
physical exertion are an everyday component of the work. A driver at Pensworth
needs to be fit and healthy. A high technical driving ability and experience is
essential and all drivers are required to have at least 5 years lorry driving
experience before joining the team.
A
good driver at Pensworth is much more than just a driver and we acknowledge this
with the title Customer Service Manager. The driver needs to be multi-skilled.
They need to be personable, good communicators and time managers, organised and
have a proven numeracy and literacy ability.
The driving team aim to provide a first rate product and a first rate service to Pensworth customers. They aim to be the best and they want to always improve standards. This requires thought, care and ideas. To achieve this aim the driving team have some core beliefs and objectives.
|
Presentation
of them-selves, the vehicle and the product to a high standard is essential.
Pensworth want to work towards achieving these high standards. Uniforms are
available. Pensworth aim to have well presented lorries on the road and to
clean them regularly. Pensworth want to deliver a clean product in clean
containers. If any of these standards are falling we need to high-light them
and work to eradicate them.
|
To
improve standards of driving and lorry operation requires training and
instruction.
Pensworth want to make this available to all who require it, as necessary.
This can either be informal, on-the-job training, or formal training by
official training institutions. A
good driver can have a dramatic effect on fuel consumption levels, tyre wear
and parts wear. Pensworth want to aim to have high mileage returns to
diesel usage and low replacement rates of parts due to wear and tear. The
cost savings from doing this are extremely significant.
|
Most
of the Pensworth product range needs
to be correctly chilled. Pensworth’s principle product – milk – is
particularly sensitive to temperature and must be kept below 5 degrees
Celsius at all times. Ideally 2 or 3 degrees Celsius should be aimed for.
|
The
same is true about milk quality. A large part of Pensworth’s reputation
rests on the quality of our product.
If a customer or a staff member suspects that the product quality of the
milk has been compromised, it must be brought to the attention of senior
management immediately, so that the situation can be dealt with promptly. A
loss of faith in the product can have dramatic effects on the business.
|
The
other main corner stone that Pensworth’s reputation rests upon relates to quality
of service. This involves regular daily deliveries, which arrive at the
same time, day-in-day-out, delivered by the same courteous people. A good
delivery person will encourage customers to maintain their relationship with
Pensworth when problems arise and will generate high levels of loyalty to
the company from the customer.
|
Finally and most importantly, careful driving of the lorries and courteousness when dealing with the customer are the two key characteristics of a successful Pensworth driver. |
